All About Farm Animals

Horses, cows, sheep, pigs, goats... they aren't just for farmers anymore! Many people have brought a piece of the country into their homes and hearts. Miniatures or giants, fuzzy or smooth, farm animals offer a country flare to pet ownership.

Responsible Pet Ownership

People thinking about obtaining a farm animal should carefully consider whether their lifestyle and finances are compatible with a considerable commitment of time, effort and money over a long period. Potential pet owners should consider the type of pet best suited to them, especially if they are considering something the size of a horse! Large farm animals in particular, will eat a LOT of food when compared to a pet hamster or gerbil. The responsibilities of owning a farm animal is significant and long-term. Ownership should be considered a privilege and not a right. Acquiring a large animal such as horses, ponies, and even miniature pigs should not be the result of a spontaneous or unplanned action. It should be the result of careful planning and a clear understanding of all the legal and other responsibilities involved. Therefore the decision to own a farm animal should be an informed one, with acknowledgment by prospective owners of the commitment and responsibility involved in caring for them.

You should not attempt to own an animal to keep as a pet that belongs on a farm if in fact you do not have a farm - or the space in which to raise these animals.  Piglets are cute but they grow up.  Goats have a tendency to eat things you might not want them eating.  Horses and cows have big big appetites and need room to roam.
